Class of 2019-2020
University College Cork, 2019
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Why I chose ESTEEM:
I chose ESTEEM as an Irish student of electrical and electronic engineering looking to further my skill set, meet new people and start a career in innovation in the US. I wanted to combine my passions for problem solving and social change, and ESTEEM is the perfect place for me to marry the two.
My capstone project and why I'm excited about it:
My capstone project is called “Connected Solutions”. I am working to help Sloan Valve integrate Tooshlights into their connected bathroom ecosystem. Tooshlights is a smart system that uses LEDs above bathroom stalls to give public bathroom users clear indications of which stalls are empty and which are free. Data from the system is collected and presented to custodial staff to create efficient maintenance schedules, and to patrons to determine stall availability and wait times in advance of visiting the bathroom. My role involves determining the smartest way to integrate this technology into the Sloan Valve connected bathroom. This ecosystem includes automatic toilet and urinal flushometers, soap dispensers, hand dryers and faucets. This project is exciting to me because it’s a problem everyone faces and so my user interviews will be really varied and not limited to any specific demographic. This project also requires me to build a business case for each Sloan Valve product to be integrated to the system which will give me a huge amount of experience in market and product analysis.
What I hope to do after ESTEEM:
After ESTEEM I hope to stay in the US and start a career in engineering and innovation. I want to get experience in a successful start-up or venture before eventually starting my own business. I have met so many amazing people through ESTEEM already and I’m excited for our paths to cross in the future and to take on new challenges with such a like-minded yet diverse group!
What I like to do when I'm not working:
When I’m not working I like to have fun with my class, whether it’s a pick up soccer game, cook out or lazing by the pool, we’ve had a great summer together! I love to travel and want to take the opportunity this year to see as many US states as possible, so each class break has already been filled with travel plans with ESTEEM friends.
