Lead Testing

Student: Katie Shannon, 2019-2020

There are millions of households that contain high amounts of lead which could cause irreversible damage to the residents, but many of these homes go unnoticed and untested so lead poisoning continues to persist in many communities. Researchers at the University of Notre Dame have developed new technology to make a Lead Sample Collection Kit. This kit provides a proactive solution to the early identification of potential threats and the determination of their severity. X-Ray Fluorometer technology paired with computer vision software will be used to screen collected samples from dust, soil, and paint. I will be exploring avenues to raise awareness for the need for lead testing as well as exploring a variety of potential business models for this new technology. The team and I hope to improve the environmental health of communities by reducing the quantity and severity of lead poisoning cases.
