Commercial Opportunities for Northwell's Clinical Trials in Oncology

Student: Mary Gaytko, 2020-2021

Sponsor: Northwell Health / Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, New York City, NY

For my capstone project this year, I will be working with Northwell Health & The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research regarding the conduct of clinical trials, with a focus on oncology as the first commercial opportunity. Northwell Health, with its 23 hospitals, is the largest healthcare provider in New York state, with the Feinstein Institutes as its center of medical research. Prior to COVID, over 2500 clinical research projects were in process at Northwell, most of which struggled with lack of funding, lack of eligible candidates, insufficient training for Principal Investigators, and/or low completion rates. Since the outbreak, new procedures and criteria have been implemented, requiring that trials are feasible, scientifically rigorous, have specifically trained Principal Investigators, and have external financial sponsorship. As a result of such criteria being implemented, the efficiency and effectiveness of respective trials have greatly improved. Over the course of this year, I will be looking into how these new procedures can be expanded and commercialized on a broader scale, specifically when applied to oncology. I will be conducting competitive analyses and market research, as well as crafting financial P/L models, with the goal that Northwell will be able to attract a greater number of quality, funded clinical trials from the biopharmaceutical industry.
