Why did you choose ESTEEM?
I have spent the last three years working in research labs in both Houston and New York. I loved my time working in translational biology research, but during this time I developed a strong interest in the innovative side of science. I regularly collaborated with biotech companies testing new therapies which captivated me. When I read about ESTEEM, I realized it was the perfect opportunity for me to explore the innovative side of science and medicine. I believe that this program is fantastic for those with STEM backgrounds like myself who want to bolster their business skills and dive into their entrepreneurial inclinations.
What is your capstone project?
The student is working on a project for Coast Southwest as they work to develop and distribute sulfate-free surfactants. Traditional surfactants containing sulfates subsist in market-leading cleaning products, but a shift in consumer perception has allowed sulfate-free products to take hold in the market, due to their potential to cause irritation in the skin, eyes, and mouth. In the past, utilizing sulfate-free surfactants was more expensive. However, recent acquisitions and R&D breakthroughs have presented Coast Southwest with an opportunity for cheaper manufacturing. Throughout this project, the student will be performing stage gate reviews, product and technology reviews, IP analysis, feasibility analysis, competitive landscape analysis, and crafting a go-to-market strategy for Coast Southwest.
What do you hope to do after ESTEEM?
After ESTEEM I hope to pursue a career in a biotech or medtech startup. I want to be on the ground floor of biology innovation and help change healthcare as we know it. This is something that I have been fascinated with since I first began studying biology as a college freshman, and now I have an opportunity to be a part of it.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am very big into sports and fitness, so most people run into me at the gym. Other than that I like to play piano and I have been teaching myself how to cook!
