Capstone Project Abstract:

This capstone project is focused on assessing the market opportunity for a groundbreaking medical device in the spinal motion preservation market. The student is collaborating with the Founder of Enlighten Mobility, Marissa Koscielski, and spine surgeons at an academic medical center to analyze a technology that restores natural motion to the neck. This project directly addresses the limitations of the current standard of care—spinal fusion surgery—which permanently eliminates a patient’s mobility. Through in-depth stakeholder interviews and a rigorous market analysis, the student will develop a strategic roadmap for the company's entry into this underserved market. This work aims to accelerate the development of an innovative solution that offers patients a better quality of life and gives surgeons a superior alternative to traditional fusion.

Why did you choose ESTEEM?

I chose ESTEEM because I want to bridge the gap between my technical engineering background and the real-world impact of that technology. While my undergraduate projects were technically rewarding, I was driven by a deeper purpose: to ensure my skills could create tangible, meaningful change for people. My experiences, particularly seeing firsthand the challenges of healthcare access in my home country, Rwanda, fueled a determination to contribute to solutions that improve patient outcomes. ESTEEM’s unique program is the perfect place for me to develop the skills needed to amplify my impact and bring life-changing innovations to those who need them most.

What do you hope to do after ESTEEM?

After ESTEEM, it is my hope to pursue a career at the intersection of innovative technology and compassionate outreach. My immediate goal is to work in the medical device or healthcare technology space, where I can apply the strategic and business skills gained from this program to bring impactful, life-changing products to market. Beyond my immediate career path, ESTEEM is also an essential step toward my long-term aspiration of becoming a physician. I am passionate about contributing to a future where technology transforms lives and where effective healthcare is accessible to all, especially those in underserved regions. I am committed to contributing diverse ideas which are essential for developing truly innovative and impactful solutions.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy partaking in creative writing in my free time. You can also find me at a local coffee shop, on the hunt for the best pastries (not coffee unfortunately) or at an ice cream shop.
