Capstone Project Abstract
KC Can Compost is an environmental organization based in Kansas City, Missouri, working to expand food waste diversion and promote environmental justice and education. The organization is developing a Regional Composting Resource Center, with the intention to be a digital platform that makes composting education, resources, and opportunities for community engagement more accessible across the Kansas City region. This project will investigate the market opportunity and potential users for the resource center. It will focus on customer discovery and market research to identify which audience or segment demonstrates the greatest need and behavioral demand for the resource. The project will include customer discovery, industry and competitive landscape research, analysis of existing educational and composting resources, and development of a recommendation based on evidence gathered throughout the process. The findings will help KC Can Compost determine how the Resource Center can best support its mission while creating meaningful value for the communities it serves
Why did you choose ESTEEM?
I chose ESTEEM because I wanted to learn how scientific ideas can move beyond research and become practical solutions with measurable real-world impact. My background in environmental studies, particularly my work with plants, soil, and environmental restoration, helped build my scientific research skills, but also raised questions about how those discoveries can be translated into action. ESTEEM offered an opportunity to build on my scientific background while developing skills in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, and interdisciplinary problem solving. I was also drawn to the program because it would allow me to explore these connections without requiring me to have my entire career path determined in advance.
What do you hope to do after ESTEEM?
After ESTEEM, I hope to pursue a career in environmental science, particularly in soil science or botany. I am especially interested in laboratory and research-based work where I can study environmental challenges and develop practical solutions. I hope to combine the scientific foundation I have built through my undergraduate studies with the interdisciplinary and problem-solving skills I gain through ESTEEM
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I play a lot of soccer, I also enjoy running and golf. When I am tired and need to unwind I enjoy cooking with some music or a podcast and to keep my brain sharp I like playing poker with friends.
