Biomedical Engineering

Why I chose ESTEEM:

I feel like ESTEEM chose me. As a senior undergraduate studying biomedical engineering I went through a existential crisis going down the "Master's or PhD..?" route. I felt maybe a PhD wasn't for me, but I didn't want a traditional "status quo" master's either. After repeatedly plastering my dorm room with several pros and cons charts (just ask my roommate), and months of grad school searching I stumbled upon the ESTEEM page on the Notre Dame website. After that, I never looked back.

My capstone thesis project and why I'm excited about it:

I have the honor of working with One Parish, a tech platform based on supporting Catholic church communities around the U.S. This platform uses an app integrated with the mass times of all the churches nearby, tells you what parishes are doing on certain days (i.e. Confession). Another thing the startup, One Parish provides is an easy online system for donating to your local parish. I'm excited because church is how I grew, it's how I was raised, and it is the community where I've made the best family and friends. To me church reminds me of community, and everyone deserves community. Thus, having the ability to enhance the community experience and help local parishes continue to thrive is a great opportunity for me.

What I hope to do after ESTEEM:

Honestly, no idea. If I had to start off, one thing I'm really passionate about is church ministry, especially college campus ministry. I'm attending a campus ministry conference for before the fall semester starts. I hope to one build a startup that is literally an arm, a supplement to the campus ministries at various colleges. I'm not entirely sure how I'd do it, but that's the exciting part. All I know that along the way of this goal, this dream, my goal is to learn as many technical skills as possible. That is why the opportunity to work One Parish and learn app development is such a huge deal for me.

What I like to do when I'm not working:

I love basketball, creative writing/poetry, and chill social time and conversations with small groups. I love watching shows like the Flash and Gotham!

And finally:

I also love card games and the strategizing involved in them! I was a huge nerd when it came to playing Yugioh as a kid and not going to lie, every few years during summer that urge comes back. Also in that, I really loved Dragonball Z as a kid. I'll frequently watch the abridged (parody) versions of them now and it's a great reminder of my childhood.
