Why did you choose ESTEEM?

I chose the ESTEEM program because I did not want to be confined to merely one realm of study. After obtaining a major in Chemistry and a minor in Business, I quickly came to realize that my passion was an intersection of these two fields of study. The ESTEEM program granted me the opportunity to learn how to be an entrepreneur in a world full of solvable problems, by applying so much of what I had already learned. Over the course of the program, I aspire to become an innovator, connect with like-minded individuals, and chart a course that positively impacts our planet and its people.

What is your Capstone Project and why are you excited about it?

For more than a generation, Whirlpool has consistently delivered a diverse range of novel appliances across the globe with an aim to improve the lives of consumers, starting in the home. While Whirlpool appliances are built to last, there are many extrinsic factors that contribute to the appliances themselves becoming dirty and inefficient. From appliances with various odors to inefficient dishwashers, many of the issues lie in the misconception that the appliances we use to clean are in fact clean themselves. To remedy this issue, Whirlpool created the Affresh appliance care products, which “have been designed to deliver easy and effective solutions to cleaning appliances, especially deep inside where odor-causing residue and buildup can affect machine performance.” Even though Affresh appliance care products have been on the market for over fifteen years, there are a few key areas of improvement this capstone project seeks to address. First, current homeowners & appliance users will be interviewed, as there is a lack of understanding as to what consumers are looking for in appliance cleaning products. Second, research on topics of sustainability, scents, and certifications will be conducted to determine the applicable trends in each prospective category. Third, an assessment of the validity of transitioning to fully sustainable packing will be evaluated. Compiling this information will help create a redefined Affresh Roadmap.

What do you hope to do after ESTEEM?

After ESTEEM, I want to contribute to a sustainable forward company by applying my STEM, business, and entrepreneurial knowledge to solve science-based problems. Problems that ignite my passion include green chemistry, sustainable energy, and healthcare innovations for the masses.

What do you like to do in your free time?

When I am not working I love to take long walks around campus, play soccer with friends, bake sweet treats, and immerse myself in the joys of nature photography. I am also very passionate about giving back to the community by volunteering, specifically in the realm of food insecurity.
