Class of 2017-2018

Trinity College, 2017
Mechanical Engineering

Why I chose ESTEEM: As a mechanical engineer I love designing and building solutions that solve a real world problem. However, after many failed attempts to launch these products I realized that in order to secure funding and bring these ideas to life you need business and entrepreneurship skills. The ESTEEM program is perfect for me because I learn all the information I need to launch my ideas and apply this knowledge through "get out of the building" assignments and my capstone thesis.

My capstone thesis project and why I’m excited about it: My thesis is working on replacing barcodes with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in grocery retail to improve the customer shopping experience and improve the operational efficiency of stores. The potential that RFID technology has is immense and it will be an integral part of the Internet of Things, which is why this is such an exciting project.

What I hope to do after ESTEEM: My dream is to start my own company based on my Capstone thesis. I love taking an idea from being nothing more than electrical pulses in my brain and transforming it into a fully functioning, tangible product that will make people's lives better. I'm still a bachelor (and eligibly so) but I imagine that the love and pride of this process can only be topped by the miracle of childbirth itself! What's more is that once your product is born you get the opportunity to raise it and see it grow from scratch into a fully fledged business capable of looking after itself.

What I like to do when I’m not working in Innovation Park: After a long day of class I love playing basketball and soccer with the rest of the class to blow off some steam and have some fun. My Irish upbringing has left much to be desired with regards to my basketball skills but I'm working on it and the guys are showing me the ropes. On that note I'd like to say that the ESTEEM class this year is fantastic to be a part of and we do so many things together (Rick and Morty viewing parties, grilling, sport, and of course seshing!). Let's just say that Friday night is always a great night!
