Matt is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (B.S. Bioengineering) and Washington University in Saint Louis (Ph.D. Biophysics).

He is currently a research associate professor within the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, where he serves as the Director of Biological Imaging which spans the In Vivo Imaging, Optical Microscopy, and Histology Cores.  Matt also leads an independent laboratory of talented staff, post-docs, and undergraduates with research centered at the the interface of 3D printing technology and biomedical imaging.  Areas of focus include the creation of anatomical models derived from patient data, as well as the development of animal anesthesia delivery devices.  During the past three years, Matt's lab has accrued over a dozen patent submissions that have served as cornerstones for the creation of four startup companies: In Vivo Concepts LLC, Biomedical Constructs LLC, Benefactory Manufacturing and Design LLC, and most recently, Flourish3D.  Matt's group is also active in the development of new in vivo imaging strategies to non-invasively monitor biological models of disease. His work is currently funded through a combination of generous industrial sources and internal awards, and he welcomes new collaborations. Taken together, Matt operates a vibrant, collaborative, and entrepreneurial laboratory, with broad experience in imaging technologies including whole animal fluorescence, bioluminescence, planar X-ray, PET, SPECT, MRI, X-ray CT, in addition to additive manufacturing.
